Reference Portions for Logging and Shopping

Three portion presets cover common references: Label (~4 oz cooked), Home (~6 oz raw — default for dinner shopping), and Hearty (~8 oz raw). Side dishes use 50%; appetizers 35%. Children's reference portions use about 65% of the adult amount in our model.

Reference Portion Sizes

Nutrition labels often list 85–113g (3–4 oz) as a reference serving. Home dinner shopping commonly uses 170g raw (~6 oz). Hearty or event portions often run 225g raw (~8 oz). Event style (buffet, feast) adds a quantity factor in our model on top of these presets.

Main Course vs Side Dish vs Appetizer

Main course portions use the full preset amount. Side dishes use 50%. Appetizers use 35%. For buffets, select the Buffet event style (+20% in our model) or add an optional buffer.

Whole Fish vs Fillet Yield

Whole round fish typically yield 35–50% edible meat after cleaning and filleting. Our calculator uses a 42% default. If you need 1 kg of fillet, our model estimates roughly 2.4 kg of whole fish. Steaks and fillets are logged at edible weight.

Raw vs Cooked Weight When Shopping

Fish loses moisture when cooked. Our model applies a 88% cook yield (grilled/baked average). To serve 400g cooked, our model estimates about 455g raw. Pan-frying may differ due to moisture loss and added oil.

Shopping Notes for Fresh and Frozen Fish

Fresh and frozen fish are sold in different pack sizes at counters and stores. For events, frozen portions can be thawed overnight in the refrigerator. Round up to the nearest available pack size when logging your shopping list.

Estimating Fish for Parties and Events

Enter your guest count, select appetizer or main course, and add a 10–20% buffer for events. For mixed groups, use the “Mixed Group” setting (85% of adult reference per person in our model).

Leftover Logging

Use the optional buffer to include extra quantity in your log for leftovers or second servings. Storage times depend on your refrigeration, packaging, and local handling practices.
